Latin and Classical Studies Lessons with Wes

In addition to performing and composing for cello, Wes Swing teaches online Latin lessons to students in the Bay Area and beyond. He has a degree in Latin and Classical Studies from the College of William and Mary, and 15 years of Latin teaching experience (independent school, private and small group lessons for BAGHS and homeschool students). In 2019 he formed Seven Hills Online Classical, which offers small group and private instruction in Latin, ancient Greek, ancient civilization, and philosophy.

He takes an individualized approach to lessons, teaching to the strengths and learning styles of every student. Using the Cambridge Latin course as a guide, students also learn extensive etymology and English vocabulary building through Latin derivatives and ancient Roman history and culture. Wes' teaching style is creative yet academically rigorous. Projects include writing stories for a yearly Latin Halloween book, performing plays in Latin, and composing Latin letters. Students' ages range from 8-18, and Wes teaches all levels of Latin through AP test prep and college tutoring.

He meets with students once or twice per week over Skype, Google Hangouts, or FaceTime, and is available year-round for homeschool students who learn over the summer. Wes travels through the Bay Area every few months for concerts and tries to schedule in-person lessons while in town. If you are interested in lessons or have questions about rates, etc., please fill out the form below or email Wes directly.

“Wes is not only one of the most talented musicians I've ever heard, but also a teacher who is able to connect his students to the materials in such an engaging, scholarly and enjoyable way. My daughter always looks forward to her Latin sessions. Valete!”

— Gloria (San Francisco)

“Wes has been my Latin teacher for five years. He is my favorite teacher. He has a great sense of humor, explains things well, and gives good examples. Wes is creative in his teaching, so the lessons are always interesting, and tailored to the way I learn best and remember the information. I highly recommend Wes, and have complete confidence you will like him as much as I have. ”

— Alana, age 14

“Wes is one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. For instance, he uses translations to teach us grammar instead of boring exercises. He also keeps a light attitude and so taking Latin is actually fun.”

— current student

“Wes truly is outstanding in every way and always manages to be both engaging and effective. We could not have asked for a more brilliant, thoughtful, and considerate person to be a part of our son’s education and in our lives.”

— Judy Chu, Ed.D and Matthew Jacobson, Ph.D

“Wes is a really good teacher. He's patient and he's open to my ideas. He always makes Latin fun. I also really like the book we're using.”

— Josh (current student)
